Instructions

  1. Sit in a chair or lie down with your leg extended and foot off the ground.
  2. Point your toe and imagine it as a pencil that you will write with.
  3. Slowly trace the letters A through Z in the air using only ankle movement.
  4. Make each letter large and distinct, using the full range of ankle motion.
  5. Keep your leg still and move only your ankle and foot.
  6. Complete the entire alphabet before switching to the other foot.

Tips

  • Make each letter as large as possible to maximize range of motion.
  • Move slowly and deliberately through each letter formation.
  • Keep your knee and hip still, isolating movement to the ankle joint.
  • Focus on smooth, controlled movements rather than speed.

Common mistakes

  • Moving the entire leg instead of isolating the ankle joint.
  • Making letters too small, limiting the range of motion benefits.
  • Moving too quickly without proper control or form.

Safety

This exercise is very safe for most individuals. Those with acute ankle sprains should wait until initial inflammation subsides before beginning range of motion exercises.
