Instructions

  1. Sit in a chair or lie on your back with one leg extended.
  2. Lift your foot slightly off the ground or surface.
  3. Use your big toe as a pen to write the letters A through Z in the air.
  4. Make each letter as large as your ankle range of motion allows.
  5. Complete the full alphabet, then switch to the other foot.

Tips

  • Move slowly and deliberately through each letter shape.
  • Make the letters as large as possible to maximize range of motion.
  • Keep your leg still and move only from the ankle joint.
  • Focus on smooth, controlled movements rather than speed.

Common mistakes

  • Moving the entire leg instead of isolating movement to the ankle.
  • Making letters too small, limiting the mobility benefit.
  • Rushing through the alphabet without proper control.

Safety

This exercise is safe for most people. If you have acute ankle pain or recent injury, consult a healthcare provider before performing.
