Instructions

  1. Position a barbell across your upper back and stand facing a sturdy box or platform at knee height.
  2. Place your entire right foot firmly on the box, ensuring your heel is not hanging off the edge.
  3. Drive through your right heel to step up onto the box, bringing your left foot to meet your right.
  4. Step down with control, leading with your left foot first, then your right foot.
  5. Complete all reps on one leg before switching to the other leg.

Tips

  • Keep your torso upright throughout the movement to maintain balance
  • Drive through your heel rather than pushing off your toe
  • Control the descent to maximize muscle engagement
  • Choose a box height that allows your thigh to be parallel to the ground

Common mistakes

  • Using the trailing leg to push off the ground for assistance
  • Leaning forward excessively while stepping up
  • Allowing the knee to cave inward during the step up

Safety

Ensure the box is stable and non-slip. Avoid this exercise if you have knee or ankle injuries. Start with bodyweight before adding the barbell load.
